About This Book
in 1643 george fox left his home in fenny drayton, leicestershire and eventually settled in the market town of mansfield, which is some 20 miles north of nottingham. there he became an apprentice shoe-maker, but continued his spiritual searching. he came to realise that it was possible to hear god without the need for an intermediary in the form of priest or vicar. he began to preach this idea, to the horror of the authorities. great crowds gathered to hear such a charistmatic preacher and he was inprisoned many times.
his influence on the town was considerable and quakers played a dominant role over the centuries.
